Can You Get Dental Implants Removed?

If you want to remove your dental implants, rest assured that it's possible. While they are considered permanent because they're placed securely in the jaw, they're not permanent because they can be removed after they've been placed by an implantologist like Dr Gutierres. But first, why do you want to remove your dental implants?

  • The dental implant has failed or is it loose?
  • Do you have an infection like gum disease or peri-implantitis?
  • Is it causing you chronic pain or swelling?
  • Experiencing nerve or tissue damage?
  • Is your body having an allergic reaction or rejecting the implant?
  • It's been placed incorrectly, causing you discomfort and limiting your function?

Having completed hundreds of complex dental implant cases since 2006, Dr Gutierres can help resolve any problem with your implant - especially if you've had it placed abroad and are unhappy with the fit, feel or overall results.

The removal process is more complex than the placement procedure

While removing dental implants is possible, it's not a straightforward procedure. But it's something dentist Dr Gutierres has had to do a lot in recent years, as he's one of the rare few dentists in the UK willing to help patients who have gone abroad to reverse disastrous dental work. So, extra care and attention need to be taken during the removal procedure because different brands and application methods have been used, which we may not be familiar with. For example, knowing the implant's brand will be especially helpful so we can use the correct driver to unscrew it. However, when the implant brand is unfamiliar, we might have to remove more bone to remove it.The downside of this method is that if the patient wants to replace the implant with a UK-standard one, we'll have to rebuild the bone first, resulting in longer treatment timeframes and higher costs. However, if you're having your dental implant removed for other reasons, such as an infection or gum disease, the process is much easier, simply because the bone keeping the dental implant in position has deteriorated.

Removing an implant that's broken

In some scenarios, dental implants might require removal when the prosthetic has broken. While titanium implants are very strong, sometimes, when thinner implants are used, paired with long-term biting forces, the implant can break. In situations like these, we can remove the implant in two stages. The first stage will involve a 30-minute procedure to remove bone from the implant before we can remove the implant itself.Following this, if you want the dental implant replaced, we would allow the area to heal and reconsider your options in six months to see how much bone has regenerated before concluding if you need a bone graft to have the implant re-implanted.

Dental implant abroad removal

Only a handful of UK dentists know the problems and how arduous the process of removing dental implants abroad can be. Dental practices might be showcasing good deals abroad, but the realities of cheap treatment can turn into a nightmare not even two years later. As clinics abroad use cheaper, smaller and thinner dental implant screws of brands, we're not familiar with; it can be challenging to source the medical-grade equipment required to work with them.In some scenarios, removing the foreign implants can be easy work (if they've not integrated), and in others, very complex, especially if they've integrated oddly, which might leave you with a large hole in your jaw and limit your future treatment options to replace your teeth.Patients in this situation, sadly, have already paid to have the implants placed, then pay to remove them, pay further for a temporary tooth replacement prosthetic, and then finally pay a final time to have the treatment carried out correctly.UK dentistry might be more expensive, but you're choosing dentistry carried out in a more controlled, internationally recognised format that helps you avoid the pain and problems that tend to come with cheaper treatment abroad. But we understand that hindsight is incredible - and if you find yourself in this situation, we can sympathise and thankfully help.
