“Is it safe to have dental implants in the UK?”If you have to Google this question, then you already know the answer. As our principal and leading implant dentist, Dr Pedro Guterries has had a significant involvement in complex implant cases, many of which involve rectifying cases gone wrong abroad. We implore you to think twice before jetting off.
It’s not just in countries like Turkey that offer low-cost dental implants, but throughout Europe, in places like Hungary. In dentistry, it’s essential to understand that lower prices often indicate the use of cheaper materials. In the case of dental implants, which rely on a crucial process called osseointegration to fuse with your jawbone and work successfully, cutting corners and costs is not recommended, as it’s typically associated with higher failure rates.
Most dentists in the UK, like us, use specific brands of dental implants for a reason. Brands like Straumann and Nobel Biocare are in high circulation due to decades of clinical evidence and research, which we’ve broken down in a separate article here. However, if you've noticed logos like Straumann's on a Turkish website, we recommend that you investigate it further. Please don’t take this as proof or an indication that it will be the brand of implant you receive.
We’ve seen firsthand the illusion marketing on certain "treatment abroad" websites. For example, we've seen them use logos of the brands we use in the UK, but then, when looking into the package details, it's using a different and unfamiliar brand of implant instead. As we’re all online all the time, we forget to question certain things - we all trust too quickly and must bear in mind that misleading marketing exists to take advantage of your trust and take your money. You may also be assured that dentists in the UK can help if a complication arises. But that's not specifically true either - you'll find it very difficult for someone to help.Learn more about dental implants abroad.
We've met with many people suffering from complications due to Turkey Teeth, and their stories are often heartbreaking and difficult, especially when they're back in the UK, desperately trying to find a dentist who can help them.Patients must understand that it’s too high a risk for a different dentist to step in and try to rectify the work of other dentists who use different brands and techniques. So, bear in mind that you might be left in pain with nowhere to turn to and in a worse condition than when you started.
It’s also critical to bear in mind that the reason you’re going to Turkey is to save money. So, if you do happen to find a dentist who will help as we have in the past, it won’t cost you a couple of hundred pounds to sort it out. You’re likely going to be facing costs up to £20,000.
Additionally, since there’s no regulatory body to complain to or seek help from, as we have in the UK, where can you turn? How can you get your money back? So, no, it’s not safe to have dental implants in Turkey.
If your case needs crucial attention, where there are complex issues like a lack of bone, then again, you’re at a higher risk of implant failure or your implants not surviving.Dentists in the UK are more expensive because we take all of this into consideration and take our time to plan correctly, so we ensure we place the dental implant in the right spot.Cheaper treatments abroad lead to faster surgeries, poorer pre-planning and a higher chance of failure and risk. How else is it cheaper?Learn more about complex implant cases.
A quick Google search asking for the success rates of dental implants in Turkey will present rates of 95% to 95%, but these aren’t figures based on studies from Turkey or patients who have had dental implants in Turkey. So, we cannot assume the success rate here.We do know, though, as we’ve highlighted above, that foreign clinics have a higher rate of complications. That’s just a fact.Patients can get a better idea of success rates by understanding the brand of the implant, researching clinical studies and getting a better idea of what they’re actually receiving.Read more on the dangers of Turkey Teeth and what can be done.
