Guide to tooth toothache

Relieve toothache at home

  • Rinse your mouth with warm, salty water
  • Lessen swelling by placing ice pack for 15 minutes
  • Chew food on the other side of the mouth
  • Take pain relief medication like Ibruprofen and follow the instructions on the label
  • Avoid acidic and sugary foods

What Not to Do

  • Eat or drink sugary substances like sweets
  • Avoid hot or cold drinks and foods
  • Do not smoke
  • Do not ignore it

Never Ignore Tooth Pain

Tooth pain is an indication that something is wrong. Sometimes, the pain might range from mild to severe, which can come and go. However, it can be disturbed or made worse when eating and drinking.

As dentists, we know that this pain gets progressively worse the more it is ignored, and it can often lead to more costly dental fixes and repairs.

Our advice is to see an emergency dentist as soon as you can.

Typical Emergency Treatments

Depending on the cause of your tooth pain and the extent of the damage, several treatments might be applicable.

Most common solutions include:

  • If caused by decay a dental filling can be used. However, if the extent of the decay is too much an inlay or onlay might be recommend, and if that fails, a dental crown.
  • If your dental pulp is infected, which is followed by symptoms of sensitivity and tooth discolouration, a root canal will be required to save the tooth.
  • If the tooth is beyond saving, tooth extraction will be recommended as a last resort.

If the dental pulp is infected, a course of antibiotics or a root canal treatment may be necessary. During this procedure, your emergency dentist will remove the pulp, fill the space with paste and cover the rest of the tooth with a crown to seal and protect it.

Reasons for Toothache

Dental pulp can be inflamed for several reasons like:

  • Tooth decay caused by cracked or broken teeth
  • Broken, damaged or loose fillings
  • Gums that are receeding

Other causes of tooth pain might involve:

  • Wisdom tooth eruption
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Bacterial infections or ulcers
  • Inflammation of the sinus
  • Grinding or clenching teeth
  • Tooth abscess

Emergency Symptoms

  • Pulsating sensation in the teeth or gums like a heartbeat
  • Dull throbbing pain in the jaw
  • Sharp pains when eating or drinking
  • Swelling in the affected area
  • Pain is persistent or comes and goe
  • Associated symptoms might include headache or fever
  • Severe, sharp or throbbing tooth pain.
  • Inflamed or throbbing gums / OR any changes to your gums.
  • Infections like abscesses especially if accompanied by swelling or fever.
  • Any type of dental trauma, like chips, cracks or knocked-out teeth. Even with chips and cracks, bacteria can access the pulp of the tooth much easier causing more severe infections and dental decay issues.
  • White spots appearing on teeth.
  • Dry mouth or growths appearing in the mouth.
  • Increased tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods.
  • Recurring bad breath (halitosis).
  • Loose, wobbly or shifting teeth.
  • Any pain within the mouth or jaw.

See a dentist now if

  • It lasts more than two days
  • Hurts when you bite down
  • Is not relieved with over the counter pain relief
  • You have a high temperature
  • Have red or swollen gums
  • Your cheek or jaw is swollen

Only go to A&E if your neck or eye is swollen or the swelling in your mouth is impacting your ability to breathe.
