Dental Crowns

Restore your tooth's original strength and beauty with a custom-made crown.

A crown is the ideal solution for a tooth that is broken, heavily filled, or weakened. It acts as a protective shield, encasing the entire visible portion of the tooth to restore its shape, integrity, and function for the long term.

Dental Crowns: Types, procedure & Cost

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that restore and protect broken and weakened teeth affected by advanced dental decay. Constructed from materials like metal, porcelain and resin, a dental crown will last anywhere from five to 15 years, depending on the type of crown you choose. Unsure? Book a check-up. Pay for dental crowns monthly

If you’ve been recommended a dental crown to protect your tooth from further exposure to decay, you should not delay your treatment.

Whilst the tooth can survive several weeks without a crown, the tooth remains exposed, which can cause heightened sensitivity, dental pain and further damage that might lead to a tooth extraction.

At Maida Smiles, we offer same-day crown replacements and can see you within four hours if your crown has broken.

Dental crown types

Metal dental crowns

  • Several metals are used including gold, nickel, chromium and palladium.
  • Rarely chip or break and are the longest-lasting in terms of wear.
  • Require the least amount of enamel removal.
  • Very strong crowns that can withstand biting and chewing forces sufficiently.
  • The main drawback is the metallic colour, making them more recommendable for rear teeth.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns

  • Combines the durability of metal with the natural look of porcelain.
  • Matched easily to the shade of your natural teeth.
  • High strength, but porcelain is susceptible to chipping over time.
  • Can wear down the enamel of opposing teeth.
  • Known to have a dark, metal gum line.
  • Last just as long as metal crowns – used on both front and back teeth.

Porcelain dental crowns

  • Hard inner core made from ceramic as opposed to metal.
  • All-porcelain crowns mimic the translucency of natural tooth enamel.
  • The only drawback is that the layers of ceramic are susceptible chips over their lifetime.
  • Best for front and visible teeth.

Ceramic dental crowns

  • Mimics the appearance of tooth enamel more than another dental crown type.
  • Best for patients with metal allergies.
  • One type of ceramic crown is zirconia, which is highly durable and withstands heavier forces than other types of ceramic crowns. From £1,250.
  • Gentle on neighbouring teeth resulting in less enamel wear.

Same-day crowns (CEREC)

Using CAD/CAM technology, dental crowns can be made in the dentist’s office, the same day as your appointment, being ready in just 15 minutes – which means you won’t have to wait weeks for the lab to custom create your crown. Taking digital impressions of your smile, the software sends the impressions to the on-site milling machine, which creates a crown to your specifications from a solid block of ceramic.

Choosing the best type

We offer several types of crowns and materials, from ceramic and porcelain to metal crowns.

Choosing a crown type often comes down to budget and aesthetics. As porcelain crowns have translucent properties, which means they can mimic natural teeth well, they are often the go-to choice.

But white-coloured materials like Zirconia or Emax are also popular in cases where patients are not hugely concerned about their crowns blending in, especially to cover back molars.

Metal-based crowns can also offer superior strength and are recommended for rear teeth and molars as they provide better chewing distribution and stability.
