Here for nervous patients

Intravenous sedation is a conscious sedation, sometimes referred to as twilight sedation is a common type of pain control, which can relax you to the point of falling asleep.

IV sedation is typically used in short, less complex procedures where an injection of local anaesthetic is not enough, but general anaesthesia isn’t necessary.

At Maida Smiles, we can use it in our practice for patients who are scared, anxious or nervous about upcoming procedures like dental implants.

With IV sedation, patients are in a completely relaxed state – and whilst this method of pain control doesn’t put you under, patients often feel so relaxed they nod off.

The reason this monitored anaesthesia care works so well is because patients are left with little or no memory of the procedure, and no memory = no painful or bad experience to remember.

Levels of sedation

  • Minimal: You’ll be relaxed and conscious with the ability to understand any dental questions and follow directions. We typically prescribe this level of sedation if we need you to be involved in the procedure.
  • Moderate: Here, you’ll feel drowsy and might even fall asleep during the procedure, which means you’ll likely not remember some of the procedure.
  • Deep: You won’t be unconscious, but are often so relaxed that you may fall into a nice, comfortable sleep throughout the procedure with little to no memory of it at all.

How it works

Analgesics and sedation are provided through a cannula (small plastic tube) in a vein on the back of your hand or arm – and depending on the complexity of your procedure, the level of sedation may range from minimal to deep. The treatment works quickly, leaving patients feeling instantly relaxed.

What sedation is like

Patients given moderate or deep sedation might be given oxygen during the procedure as this level of sedation might slow their breathing.

Once our dental surgeons have completed the procedure, patients wake up fairly quickly once the medications are stopped.

If you’ve ever had general anaesthesia before, you’ll likely expect to wake up to side effects like drowsiness – and with IV sedation, it’s similar.

The effects will not be as heavy as a general anaesthetic, usually with no feeling of nausea as different drugs are being used – you will, on the contrary, have a very good night’s sleep. You’ll likely recover faster and be sent home in no time to rest (full effects last for an hour).

What you can do before sedation

  • Patients can have a light meal up to two hours before their procedure.
  • Clear fluids, like water, are also allowed up to two hours before surgery.
  • Alcohol beverages should not be consumed within 24 hours before your sedation visit.
  • No lipstick or nail varnish on the day of surgery.

Please ensure that you have a responsible adult who can take you home after the procedure – we would not recommend a taxi driver, for example, but someone who can ensure you get home comfortably.

Patients should also note that they should wear loose-fitting clothes, which will help us gain access to their upper arms so that we can monitor their blood pressure.

Why is IV sedation so popular with nervous patients?

  • Often safer to provide the treatment than without (on plain local anesthetic alone)
  • Better patient experience and perception of the treatment
  • Allows the patient to cooperate as they are conscious.
  • Less invasive when compared to general anaesthesia
  • Has fewer side effects than general anaesthesia.
  • Lowers risks caused by general anaesthesia.
  • Avoids the need for a breathing tube or to stay overnight under observation at the hospital.
