Think you need a dental filling?

If you can feel visible holes in your teeth, experience unexplained bad breath, or have black staining on the surface of your teeth, then it’s likely you need a dental filling. If the above resonates with you, it’s best to book a check-up with one of our London dentists, who can examine your teeth and in the same appointment, place a dental filling if you need one. New patient check-ups are charged at £110, and £95 for existing, registered patients. Alternatively, register as a new patient here.

White fillings are the modern choice

The preparation of the tooth for a white filling is much more conservative compared to traditional mercury or silver fillings.

White fillings consist of composite resin, a tooth-coloured plastic filed with glass. They are the popular choice mainly because of their cosmetic appeal. The shade of white is matched to your existing teeth, meaning that your dental fillings can blend seamlessly into your smile.

Plus, just like regular fillings, white fillings protect the teeth from decay and prevent further breakage of the remaining tooth structure. Another benefit is that they prevent sensitivity that is common once the decayed portion of the tooth has been removed.

Amalgam fillings vs composite

As experienced and holistic dentists, we will always recommend white fillings over mercury fillings because today’s composite filling materials consist of incredibly strong and durable resin polymers which we will re-enforce with nano-hybrid glass ceramics to increase the wear resistance and compressive strength.

The tooth will also remain stronger, making it more durable when using composite as less of the structure is removed. Plus, when delivered by our amazing dentists, patients should expect their white fillings to last at least 10 years – and longer if you look after your teeth and visit a hygienist regularly.

Replacing amalgam fillings

Many dentists not just in London but around the UK are beginning to discontinue the application of silver, amalgam fillings and opting for a holistic route. In fact, a ban is coming into effect January 2025 throughout Europe.

Silver fillings consist 50% of mercury along with a mixture of other powdered metals like silver, tin and copper and have become unpopular in recent years not just because of their poor aesthetic appeal, but because of their mercury content.

At Maida Smiles, we offer a service, where we can remove your silver fillings should you wish and replace them with white composites to give patients peace of mind when it comes to preserving their wider general and oral health.
